Patience equals power

While traveling abroad recently, I learned something about how people handle communication barriers. When you’re out of your comfort zone, it’s an incredible test of your patience. Visiting a foreign country and not being able to speak the local language can be quite frustrating, especially when you’re trying to get directions, make a purchase or decipher a menu. But when you react negatively to the locals in response to your frustration, you only make matters worse. Openly displaying impatience to the person you are trying to communicate with is just plain disrespectful.

I was disappointed to witness someone fly off the handle unnecessarily on several occasions during our travels. She lacked patience and lacked respect for those around her. Having patience—that is, stepping back and choosing to remain calm when you’re having trouble communicating—instantly earns you power and respect. I saw that firsthand. This kind of power lets you take control of any difficult situation and work toward making it better. Losing your cool does nothing but bring you the wrong kind of attention. It’s one of the worst ways of trying to get what you want.

Patience and power. Until now, I never realized just how much those two words make sense together.

xo,
David

  1. Hi David, I have a bit of a different situation
But it still requires patience & the power to remain
Civil. My dad is sick and is sending messages to
Me saying I am waiting for him to drop dead so
I can get what he has:( that hurts!! When I found
Out he was sick I prayed he would be here to walk
Me down the aisle. He is spreading rumors that I can't
Wait to get his house. It's taking a lot not to lose it.
I pray I will become less depressed and motivated
    I have to be dreaming...

For my day. Yes, patience & power...

  2. Dear David,

I hope you understand how much patience you already have. To get to the point where you are now takes a great deal of patience and dedication...You're already there. I admire your continued humbleness in the midst of all your wonderful accomplishments. Congratulations on all your current and future success!

    Most Sincerely,

  3. David, I just want to say that I think you are an angel sent from heaven. I watch your show and read your blogs and now I am convinced that God sent you here to earth to bring sunshine and understanding to many people. I don't know you personally but I feel like I do. If one were to look into your eyes, your wonderful and loving spirit-filled soul is what they will see. I can truly say that "I Love you David". Thank you for allowing God to use you. Be blessed!

  4. Wow, this is so timely and so poignant. I am at a pivotal point in my career right now, I think, based upon the struggle I'm having with one particular client. Communication is the biggest issue, and one of my greatest strengths - AND greatest weaknesses. Thank you for this perspective.

You are always SO sensitive and observant and such an incredible listener. You see and hear the true substance of what people are trying to say, even when they don't know how to say it. Your interpersonal skills are exceptional. Truly, your work is expression in its most beautiful form. Again, thank you for writing about patience in this way. <3 Kristi

  5. Dear David, I have dealt with the public many times. It takes a lot of strength and courage to deal with them. Yes "Patience equals Power". I have recently experienced this. My own Mom has a terminal disease, Vascular Dementia and it is hard to watch her go through this. The "Patience" part is listening to her tell old stories from the past, which I Love to hear! The "Power" part is hearing those stories and living them with her. It may sound strange but that is how it is with me. I have my own disease to deal with, but she is my strength right now. Sorry this is late in getting to your blog, I don't write much anymore. Keep up your Beautiful work!

  7. I just started watching your show and did a little research on you. I have to admit I was skeptical about the show and even you at first but your kind heart started to really shine through. I am glad to see someone genuine out there doing good and not doing it for the wrong reasons.

  8. What a beautiful blog you have written.
I have been blessed with a beautiful and loving family growing up. Both of my parents and three sisters are the greatest gifts God has given me. I have been extremely luck to have a close family. I can always remember telling my Dad and Mom "I love you". The day that my Dad went to heaven was a horrible day and a day that I will never forget. One thing that bothered me most was..I always would say "I love you" but I never told him why I loved him. I took for granted that he just knew. I took care of my Mother or should I say Mom took care of me for the next 14 years. Each day I told her and my sisters family and friends Why I love them. I would always treasure the times spent with family friends. In "the moment" that I tried to enjoy it consciously Rather then the afterwards.. looking at the pictures ..absorbing it the next day Last year my mother became very ill and she is heaven with my Dad. Even though her voice is silent ..the words I that have been spoken ...why I love you..I love you will echo forever.
