What do I do to enjoy life?

A question people ask me all the time is what do I do to relax or have fun? For me, it's just having time off, period. For anyone who reads my blog or follows my travels on Twitter and Facebook, they know my time off is very limited, so I'm super excited that my family is coming to visit me in Los Angeles this week. That, to me, is what brings me joy: spending time with the people I really care about.

In my personal life, I like to keep things simple. With my mom, dad and brother coming to LA, of course I'll give them a taste of Hollywood showing them the sights, but most importantly, the time will be spent at home, going to dinner and then we're off to Las Vegas because my dad loves Vegas. I'm really really excited because downtime is the best time for me. That sort of just 'stopping and breathing' is few and far between for me, so this is going to be a great seven days of really enjoying my time with the people I care about.

Years ago, I was walking through the North Carolina property of one of my clients, and now friends, named Beth, and she had this magnificent rose garden. I was looking at all of the colors and feeling pleasantly overwhelmed when she asked me, "Have you ever stopped and smelled the roses, David?" I laughed, you know because it's such a cliché thing to say. But she said, "No, seriously, do you ever stop to smell the roses?" And every time she'd email me afterwards, she'd end with "Don't forget, stop and smell the roses." And I think even as cliché as it is, it's so appropriate for my life right now. You have to stop and smell the roses otherwise life will go right by and you haven't had a chance to enjoy it.

  1. I TOTALLY agree with you and think that is honestly so true. Many times we are so busy, we never "stop to smell the roses" and enjoy the simple things. I know I did that when I was younger, but what's changed? Life seems to be moving much faster and I've gotten much busier and more responsibilities. But in reality, you should ALWAYS make sure you make time for YOU and the ones you love. You never know when you may not have the chance to enjoy even the simple things or be with those you love most, so we ALL should just STOP...and smell the roses! =)

  3. Hi David,

I whip out my camera and take photos of dogs and birds. Hummingbirds are quick so you have to be on your toes to snap their picture. I also love to read sitting in an old rocker that came off an old houseboat.

I love building snowmen with the neighborhood kids. So come to New York (bring your longjohns) and we can build one together and believe he is Parson Brown. I might throw in a good old fashion snowball fight. I promise not to hurt you.

I am glad to see you taking the time to relax with the busy schedule you have.

Take care and have fun in Vegas.

    Sharon

  5. Hi David
I agree with your friend Beth, that it is very important to step back and enjoy life in other words Stop and Smell the Roses. I watch your shows every week even the rerun ones and always get excited to see the out come even though I have seen it before it takes my breath away. Your grandfather saw something so Special in you at an age where most young men don't know what they want to do with their lives. David you probably get a lot of requests but I would love to give my daughter the destination wedding of her dreams but I truly can not afford it. She is a special woman who gives so much to everyone and doesn't expect anything in return just the smiles on the faces of those she helps. I have been so depressed since o had to have allmy teeth removed due to a very serious disease and I really don't feel pretty enough to attend her wedding because I don not want to spoil her day. I know that K will never hear from you but it just felt food to chats this with you. My God always bless you tor all the good things you have done.
